Character name: Sarah Manning
Series: Orphan Black
Character history: Who is Sarah Manning
Character personality: Sarah is a cameleon, able to change her personality and behavior when she has to. It was an essential skill any conartist has to be to be able to survive in the world. As of recently, it's become an necessity after stealing Beth's identity. Elixabeth 'Beth' Child was the first clone Sarah ever came across, though she thought the girl to be her twin or doppleganger. She only saw Beth for a moment as the woman jumped off the subway platform and committed suicide. Sarah saw this as chance to start her life over and stole her identity. Though it's not just Beth's identity she's had to change to. She's had to pretend to be other clones too in order to keep their secret hidden from outside their circle. Every clone has a different personality and identity, something Sarah has had to keep in mind at all times in order to pull off the stunt. She's gone in a Hotel room that Katja, a German clone, was staying at in order to get the brief case that held vital information. For Katja she managed to fool the front desk agent. For Beth, it's harder as the deceased clone had a boyfriend named Paul and a police partner named Art.
It's not an easy task to masquerade as someone else. Sarah has had to change everything about her in order to become the person she wants. She has to change her accent, her posture and the way she speaks in order to successfully pull it off. If one thing seems off, she has to think on her feet to cover up her mistake or hide the fact she doesn't know the answer. With Beth's life, she's had to go over the police files the deceased woman had in order to throw off any suspicion she wasn't Beth. She's had to watch videos of Beth to study how she's speaks and figure out on the spot how Beth interacted with Art and Paul.
Sarah views herself as an outsider ever since she was a kid being in the foster care system. The only person who's constantly been there for her has been Felix or Fe as she likes to call him. They were placed in teh same foster home with Mrs. S or Mrs. Sadler. The woman acted as a mother to Sarah, but she was a real hard ass. She was strict and Sarah didn't react well to that, especially when the old woman uprooted them from England to live in North America when she was 8. There was no explanation as to why they left England. From her shakey childhood and having a strict parent has made Sarah rough around the edges.
She has a selfish streak to her, not caring about the consequences about her actions. That changes when she finds herself pregnant at the age of 24. She tried to clean herself up to take care of her daughter, wanting to be a better mother than her birth mother. She had to stay at home with Mrs. S to raise Kira. She was doing well, but she wasn't able to do more for her daughter. Sarah wanted to give the little girl everything, but lack of education and job knowledge lead her back down her old life. Not only that but she grew tired of her boring, single life. She wanted to take Kira with her, but Mrs. S. wouldn't allow that so she left to be with an abusive, clingy boyfriend by the name of Vic. It was a selfish move on Sarah's part, something she's acknowledged and regrets. She'll fight tooth and nail to make sure she never leaves her daughter again.
Essentially Sarah is a rough around the edge's kind of a girl with street smarts. She has an askewed morality compass, trying to not be as reckless as she used to be, but sometimes it's unavoidable. Her trust doesn't come easily, but once someone's earned it she's there for them in whatever way she can be.
Journal entry sample:
[Sarah's looking over the cellphone given to her after waking up in a hospital. The phone is located in the middle of the table while she paces back and forth. Part of her is waiting to get a call from Cosima, Allison or anyone else. The texts and calls she's sent haven't worked. Every number she's dialed seemingly doesn't exist. She's waiting for a sign. A sign that her life is back to normal--well, normal as her life can possibly get with her.
It's still hard to grasp what she was told. The possibility--the facts have yet to be proven true--that she wasn't real before is a bitter pill to swallow. If that's the case then there are no clones. She's simply Sarah Manning with no criminal history or anything connecting her to the life she once lead.
But every fiber in her being is screaming it's not true. Kira's real. Felix is real. Mrs. S is real, not characters created for someone's own pleasure. Everything she and the rest of her family has gone through has to be real. Frustrated with herself she picks up her phone to throw it against the wall, putting all of her weight behind it. The force isn't enough to break the phone, but hit the wall and land on the ground with a thud.]
Fuck this shit.
[The words are whispered in a harsh voice as she picks up her coat and leaves her room.]
Log/prose based sample:
Sarah shoved her hands into her pockets trying to keep her hands warm as she walked. No matter how many times she went over the facts and details, nothing was clear. The conclusions she came to only frustrated her, but not as much as the frustration to think her own child might not be real. It's all mind games. Nothing more than that. The thought ran through her head as the wind blew back her long, dark brown locks.
She had to find a way back to Kira. The child, her child had to be real. She had spent hours in the delivery room, making promises to God to be a good mother. To be the mother she never had or the chance to meet. Mrs. S. was her foster mother, but at times she was more of a strict babysitter than anything else. While there was love between the two women, Sarah still yearned to be with the woman who gave birth to her. She didn't want to make the same mistakes her birth mother or Mrs. S. did. She wanted to do better and wanted to give more to her daughter.
Yes she made mistakes; terrible and huge mistakes, but she was learning from them. Learning that there were no easy paths to getting what one wanted, learning the consequences of her actions and to not be a selfish kid. Just as things were starting to get better they had to go down hill. It would be easy to numb herself to it all. Pick up a bottle, down its contents and pretend to float on air. She shook her head at the idea. No amount of liquor would help her now, but maybe a quick smoke might do the trick. It would certainly help take the edge off.
Taking in a deep breath she headed towards the nearest store that sold a pack of fags.
